Sennelier French Aqua-mini Palette Review: Your Best Bet for a Starter Set!
When it comes to artist-grade materials, professional watercolors are often deserving of the hype surrounding the brand and Sennelier is no different. If you're looking to upgrade your art materials into an artist grade set, then this might be the right palette for you!
Here are my thoughts on the Sennelier French Aqua-mini Palette:
I bought this set almost a year ago and it took me a long time to really get to know what this tiny palette has to offer. Now that I've branched off into making fully colored illustrations, I got the chance to experiment more with the paint sets that I have.
So before anything else, let's get into the product details of this set.
This starter palette contains a set of 8 artist-grade watercolor paints which include the following colors:
#675 French Vermillion
#703 Payne's Grey
#574 Primary Yellow
#344 Cinereous Blue
#314 French Ultramarine Blue
#805 Pthalo Green Light
#819 Sap Green
#202 Burnt Umber
While the tin case looks very compact, each color is actually around the size of a regular half pan so it's guaranteed to last a long time. This set also comes with a small brush (not much information is available on the brush but the bristles seem to be made from synthetic fibers) which is surprisingly good and deserves a separate discussion. The Sennelier French Aqua Mini Palette is currently available in Art Nebula for Php 1,320 and other art stores around the country.
1. Amazing value for its price
Compared to other Sennelier half pan sets of 12 that retail for around Php 4-5k, and the Sennelier test pack with 6 half pans at Php 1.5k, this travel set sits way below that price range and already offers 2 more colors than the test pack. If you're only after the paints themselves, this is already a huge bang for your buck considering that it will cost way less than buying all of the included shades as individual half pans that retail for Php 350 per piece. I think Sennelier cut costs in some aspects to make this palette affordable: there's not much of a mixing area on the cover and the middle area with the wells containing the paint is made of cheap plastic. The size of the tin also contributes to this, as well as the choice of including a very short wooden brush instead of something that's of higher quality. Another factor could be that the pigments used in the colors included here significantly cost less to produce compared to other shades like French Ochre or Dioxazine Purple. Overall, it's still very impressive that Sennelier has put together a budget-friendly palette of this caliber.
2. Flexible selection of colors
At first, I was pretty hesitant about the color selection because it didn't seem to have the right amount of primaries to mix colors with. I'm very surprised to learn that you can pretty much achieve all the necessary colors you need for making portraits, painting landscapes, and pretty much everything else with just some slight workarounds. Since the French Vermilion, Primary Yellow, and Phthalo Green Light are all very bright and luminous (almost approaching neon-like in brightness and vibrancy), you'll need to mix it with a neutral shade to produce a warmer counterpart. In my experience, for instances where I needed a warm yellow, I had to mix the Primary Yellow with the Burnt Umber. To my surprise, doing this did not desaturate the yellow, but instead yielded a vibrant warm yellow. As a starter set, the color selection is actually pretty good but I would have preferred a warm yellow in it. With the Burnt Umber being the only neutral in this palette, I found myself using it a lot especially when painting food. The selection stands well on its own, but if you want to further maximize this palette, you can buy additional colors such as Burnt Sienna, Yellow Ochre, Ivory Black, or Sennelier's Neutral Tint so you can achieve a larger gamut of color mixes. With that said, even with these additional colors, it would still cost you less than buying the 12-color regular palette set from Sennelier.
3. Compact and travel-friendly
As mentioned in the previous point, this Aqua Mini palette is incredibly portable since you'd already be carrying all the colors you need with you. If anything, I only wish that they included a foldable brush instead to fully make it travel-friendly. I find myself chucking this into my bag along with my pocket-sized Potentate Sketchbook whenever I have to go out. The Payne's Grey and French Vermilion can make an interesting two-color urbanscape study, similar to what Teoh Yi Chie did in this video.
In conclusion...
The Sennelier French Aqua Mini Palette is a solid purchase for artists on a tight budget. The brand's amazing history and stand-out luminous paints make Sennelier watercolors something worth investing in.

First spread on my Travelers Notebook Watercolor insert from Scribe. I must say that It took a short while to try this paper because it feels too smooth for me. The paper performed better than I expected. The watercolors play a little longer in the paper. The paints easily lofts off. I love the off white/cream colour of the watercolor paper, and my masking tape just slides off effortlessly after painting. I used my trusted travel watercolor set, my Aqua mini Sennelier extra fine French Artist watercolor. I don't often use the brush included in the set though (too small for my hands). This set is a gift from 2 years ago, I have used this for several art talks and demo already. I also took the opportunity to use the Zen Art Faux squirrel round brush no 8 for this spread. The only thing that I would love to add to this set would be a primary magenta or alizarine crimson color (just because I love that color) #RavenFox13 #ArtJournal #ArtJournaling #Watercolor #Aquarelle #aqvarell #Sennelier #TravelersNotebook #ZenArtSupplies #Flower #Artph (at Malabon City) https://www.instagram.com/p/BxjIDaADA9D/?igshid=1ohgg5mookkkv

Yey, I have a few minutes to myself. Not enough for a master piece but just enough for some play. Getting acquainted with PintaPH Lakbay Palette. I like the earthy oranges and rocky purples you can make with Kayumanggi mixed with the other two primaries: Bughaw and Ginintuan. Mixing. Maybe it's because they're from different minerals so they don't like to mix on their own (great for details). Need to persuade them with water a few brush strokes (hence the circles in the middle of the two pigments) or maybe it's based on the user XD I really love the paints! PS: the inside of the tin case is not pretty XD my paints (including another tin case with Sennelier) became moist and Itim had mold/spores (French Vermilion, Dark Green and brown of my sennelier aqua mini also had mold spores) When little, a spray of alcohol does the trick but when really bad, I need to rinse the pans a bit (yes, pigment down the drain :( ) Bughaw got contaminated with Itim when it ran so had to scrape that off two. My ten year old dong-a paints are also exhibiting moistness/stickiness but only the brownish red (I forgot the names) got mold this time. We live in the condo by the river. I'm not surprised at the humidity of the microclimate of our unit :(
